My heart skipped a beat when I saw the blue lights in my rearview mirror. Great. Just great.
I was totally unaware that I had disobeyed any traffic laws. I rolled down the window, not knowing what to expect.
After a brief conversation, the police officer pulled back out onto the highway. I turned to my mother and said, “It’s Murphy’s Law! I’m just cursed.” My mother replied, “Who in the world is Murphy?” I responded, “Oh you know…. Whatever CAN go wrong, WILL go wrong and it is going to happen to ME!”
You see, we had just lost basically everything that we owned to a flood that swept through Guadalupe County in south Texas. We were rebuilding our home while sleeping on cots and feeding two small children with shelf stable food that could be cooked in an electric skillet. (Sidenote: for some reason, our kids thought it would be funny to take off all of the labels so we would get a surprise every time we opened a can! ) Oh yeah, one more thing… I had made one big, crucial mistake… I did not buy flood insurance!
So, here I was, sitting in my car crying to my mother. She replied to me, in her no-nonsense-Pentecostal-prayer-warrior voice, “well, I don’t know who this Murphy guy is but I do know who Jesus is and the Bible says that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind, so I am binding the spirit of Murphy over your life in Jesus’ name!”
That verse, 2 Timothy 1:7, became my theme! I don’t have to walk around defeated or down-hearted! Guess what….. I have power THROUGH Him; real power! (We are still working on the sound mind!)
So, say so long to Murphy and his silly law! Adios! Toodly-doo! Hit the road! No more spirit of fear and negativity! We have MUCH HIGHER EXPECTATIONS!
Oh, and by the way, I had been pulled over for not wearing my seatbelt and only received a warning. Whew!
