So What. (Lessons From the Big C – part 2)

So what!

My sister taught me this phrase last year.

Me: “my house is a total disaster and it looks like an episode of ‘Hoarders’ “
Michelle (my sis): “so what”
Me: “sweatpants are the only clothes that I have now that fit me” (I’m an emotional eater)
Michelle: “so what”
Me: “when I go home all I want to do is lay on the couch”
Michelle: “so what”
Me: “I have two inch roots because I can’t get to my hairdresser and I don’t remember the last time I shaved my legs”
Michelle: “so what”
Me: “I am flying by the seat of my pants at work”
Michelle: “so what”

You see, when cancer, tragedy, or any critical illness strikes, your life can change in a moment. When tragedy strikes, your perspective changes. You start to think about the things in life that REALLY MATTER!

Q: What really matters today?
A: That’s easy — spending time with the people that I love and making sure that they know that I value them!

What matters…..20140123-215430.jpgSitting by Katie-Beth, my daughter, on the couch, smiling and giddy as we make our Saturday shopping plans for her to find the perfect wedding dress. What matters…. That her daddy will be able to walk her down the aisle, after beating cancer.. That she can dance with her daddy that day; something that I have heard her talk about for many years.

Photo Jan 23, 2 26 49 PMWhat matters…. Laughing out loud with Zach, my son, as we watch the most ridiculous movies. What matters… Making sure that I remember to tell him how proud I am of him for being so kind and tender hearted in order to help his friends.

I’m not a morning person and there was a time when that may have annoyed me. On this morning, I smile, thanking God that John is here with me another day.   What matters… Going all the way to Cracker Barrel with John just to share an apple dumpling and coffee.

What matters… Listening to my daughter tell others about her burden for women and children in human trafficking.

What matters…getting to watch my son play football with his absolute heart and soul.

What matters… Riding four-wheelers with my dad, watching red birds with my mom, singing with my sisters and sharing total silliness with them.

What matters… Seeing absolute enjoyment and love for music in my students.

What matters… Taking a Diet Dr. Pepper with one squirt of vanilla and one squirt of cherry in it from Kum-n-Go to my sweet friend, to let her know that I value her friendship.

Stop and get some perspective today.

Thank the Lord for the people He has placed in your life.

Take a few minutes to tell them what they mean to you.

And to the other little daily things in your life……
